| Barnaby is a very sad story. His owner passed away and her 'wonderful' family just turned poor Barnaby out into the street to fend for himself. The only reason that his story was known was that the neighbors knew about it when animal control went to the house after getting the address from a tag on his collar. Unfortunately they did not know his name so we have named him Barnaby. 2/6/02 - Barnaby had to stay in the animal shelter for an extra 5 days because of the recent ice storm here in KC and he was very happy to get out of there today. His little tail has not stopped going from the minute he got in the door. His coat is in horrible shape as you can see in the pictures taken tonight. He is matted to the skin and smells horribly at the moment. He has a appointment with the groomer first thing in the morning to get cleaned up and shaved down and then he will be going to the vet so we can try and determine his age and health. His teeth are in horrible shape and he will need to go in for a dental cleaning at the very least. I will post more info and pictures tomorrow night after his grooming and vet visits. 2/7/02 - As you can see from the new pics, Barnaby looks a thousand times better after his day of beauty at the groomers. He had to be shaved totally down but she was at least able to save his face. This evening Barnaby also had a visit to the vet. As I suspected, he is 9-10 years of age, has a little clouding in his eyes but thankfully it is not cataracts as I first suspected. Unfortunately his teeth are not salvageable. He will have to go in a week or so for dental surgery and will most likely lose the majority of his teeth. But, he will do just fine without them, will just have to eat a soft diet from now on. However he will fell much better after those awful teeth are removed and will have much better breath. Other than the problem with the teeth the vet says he is in very good health, heart and lungs sound good. Please check back in a couple of weeks for an update after his surgery. 12/21/02 - Barnaby had his dental surgery today. Unfortunately he had to have 28 teeth removed. Fortunately they were able to save his canines and have packed them in a "antibiotic concrete" to stave off any infection from the incredible amount of tartar that was removed. He is resting comfortably tonight and has eaten and seems to be doing well. The worst is over for him so now he will just need to do some healing and then will be feeling much better! July 2002 - Barnaby has been officially adopted by the head of the rescue, Wendy Wheaton |
