MACEY Macey is a purebred female Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Her estimated DOB is 7/1/08 Macey was born in a Missouri Puppymill. She had a infection which caused the broker to turn her down and then she got too old to go to a petstore. A rescuer saw her at the mill and was told he planned to either kill her or sell her to another miller for a breeding dog. Thankfully she was able to get her and keep her from both fates. Macey has a upper respiratory infection and kennel cough as well as a UTI - she is dribbling urine and we are hoping that is only due to the UTI. She is very sweet, a little shy but is coming around very quickly - she is teething and chewing on everything in sight and loves to tear up paper and play with toys. HEALTH UPDATE #1 - 11/03/08 Today we found out that, unfortunately, Macey has ectopic ureters. What this means is that her kidneys are not connected properly to her bladder and the urine is dribbling straight out of her instead of being collected in the bladder first as is normal. Macey will require surgery to correct this problem. Surgery has a 50/50 success rate in completely stopping the dribbling but it is necessary to correct the problem regardless of whether it completely eliminates the dribbling issue. Macey had her first set of tests today, including x-rays, ultrasound, bloodtests and urinalysis. She is scheduled to go back on November 17 for a couple more tests and then is scheduled for surgery on November 18th. They will also spay her during this surgery so she won't have to go under anesthesia again. This surgery does require a specialist and will cost approximately $3000. Without the surgery she will have to be euthanized so this is her only shot. We hope that many of you will consider becoming an Angel for Macey. There is a new quick pic of Macey here. She is growing up and is a gorgeous girl! HEALTH UPDATE #2 - NOVEMBER 18 Macey had her surgery today. She had ectopic ureters on both sides which were both repaired successfully. The doctor reported she handled the anesthesia and the surgery well. She was also spayed during the surgery. She will be in the hospital for 2-3 days for observation and because she has a catheter for urination. The surgery causes a lot of swelling which makes the catheter necessary. When she no longer needs to be catheterized she will be able to leave the hospital. After she gets home it is just a waiting game to see how successful the surgery was in stopping the dribbling. It will take several weeks before we will know for sure. If she has any residual dribbling there is a new procedure they are doing where they inject collagen into the sphinchter muscle which has been very successful but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. We will update again after she has come home or if there are any other newsworthy changes. Thank you to all of her Angels who are making her surgery possible. HEALTH UPDATE #3 - NOVEMBER 21 Macey is finally home! She stayed an extra night as she developed a bit of a fever the 2nd day but that quickly went away and all is well. She is very happy to be home and we had to move her to a bigger crate as she has now outgrown her puppy sized one. She is not, however, very happy about the e-collar and is now running it up and down along the bars in her crate to make a racket. She is also full of a lot of heavy sighs and meaningful looks as you can see in her pics. She has various places shaved all over her body so it looks like a deranged groomer got hold of her but it is hair so it will grow back. Macey's total for the surgery now stands at 3908. Hopefully we can raise these funds so that we will be able to pay for Bella's surgery when she is at a healthy enough weight. For anyone interested, you can see a copy of Macey's vet bill by clicking HERE Once again, thank you for all the wonderful Angels who have donated so far. Without your help we would be unable to help these dogs that require surgery and other veterinary care. Macey will go back in 2 weeks to have her staples removed and then 2 weeks after that for an exam to see how well the surgery worked. We will update as more information becomes available. HEALTH UPDATE #4 - DECEMBER 5 Macey is a happy girl tonight - NO MORE E-C0LLAR! She got her staples out this afternoon and they were very please at how well her incision had healed up. She got to run around the yard and play tonight for the first time since having her surgery which made her a tired girl as well. They did comment that she had gotten a little pudgie but the poor girl has been on a strict crate and leash regimen for more than 2 weeks so what else did she have to do other than eat? No worries though, now that the no running and jumping rule has been lifted she will burn it off in no time flat. UPDATE #5 Macey has now healed from her surgery and unfortunately, while it is much better than before, she still is dribbling urine and will most likely do so for life. We will look into trying a collagen treatment and will begin to train her to wear pullups indoors as she will most likely need to do for life. We have successfully trained many dogs to wear pullups and they have successfully been adopted into happy families. Other than the birth defect that caused the ectopic ureters, we have not found any other issues with Macey and she is perfectly healthy and she should live a long and healthy life. Macey is spayed and up to date on shots. AUGUST 2009 - A FOREVER HOME Macey has been adopted by the Abbott Family of Massachusetts CONGRATULATIONS! |
